Atkins Diet Break Down:

Atkins Diet Induction Phase:  This is the first phase of the Atkins Diet, and the hardest to stick to.  It lasts for at least 14 days. It is meant to put your body into a state of ketosis.  This simply means that your body starts producing ketones from fat which is used as a fuel source instead of carbs.  This allows you to lose weight very quickly since your body is burning away through your stored carbohydrate reserves.

In the Induction Phase of the Atkins Diet, you are allowed 20 grams of carbs a day consisting of only a few varieties of vegetables.  You are allowed to eat just about any types of meat, eggs, oil, butter, cheese and cream. Skyes the limit!

Atkins Diet Ongoing Weight Loss Phase: In this phase of the Atkins Diet, you are allowed to add a few carbs to your diet. You will be at around 40 grams per day.  You are only allowed to eat certain types of carbs. The list is included in The Atkins Diet Book.

Atkins Diet Pre-Maintenance Diet Phase: This phase of the Atkins Diet begins when you are almost at your weight loss goal, or about 10lbs from target.  You are allowed to slightly increase your carb intake a little further according to the Atkins Diet guidelines.

Atkins Diet Maintenance Diet Phase: This is the phase you begin once you have reached your goal weight. Your carb intake is increased slightly further and you are allowed a little more variety. You are told to remain at this phase for life in order to maintain your weight.
